A quick history of the MLB

The history of the MLB would take days to cover all the content that goes with it. However, we can condense the sport to a few easy sections, so you are up to date with everything that has happened in the past 150 years.

Founding and Dead-Ball era

  • From the late 1880s to the 1900s, two separate leagues eventually signed an agreement to form one MLB
  • The 1900s to 1919 featured the “dead-ball era,” which was known for not many hits or home runs.
  • In the end, that led to a change in the baseballs

Babe Ruth and Black Sox

  • The 20s saw the greatest home run hitter in Babe Ruth, who finished his career with 714 home runs.
  • The Chicago White Sox in 1919 was found to be involved in a game-fixing scandal that led to the expulsion of many Hall of Fame-caliber players.

The Yankees rise to fame

  • From 1920 to 1962, the Yankees were America’s Team.
  • The Yankees won three World Series rings in the 1920s with the “Murderer’s Row,” which featured a lineup of Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri.
  • During the 1930s, the team won four straight World Series titles from 1936 to 1939, headlined by the great Joe DiMaggio.
  • Then, in the 1940s, the Yankees added four more to their arsenal.
  • The 1950s featured five straight World Series titles from 1949 to 1953.
  • As the 1960s opened, Roger Marris and Mantle powered the franchise to championships in 1961 and 1962.

The home run kings

  • Hank Aaron accumulated 755 home runs from 1954-1976, a record that stood until Barry Bonds broke it in 2007 with 762 career home runs.
  • During the late 1990s, both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa each broke Roger Maris’ single-season home run record.
  • Bonds hold the single-season record with 72 home runs in a season.

Steroid era

  • Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa have been convicted of using steroids, which has tarnished their reputation and Hall of Fame chances.
  • Others such as Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez have also been tainted by steroid use.

The Present

  • Young faces in the league in Fernando Tatis Jr., Mike Trout, and Bryce Harper are making the game fun again.
  • The Dodgers have won eight straight divisions and are the defending World Series champions.
  • Other scandals we have seen was the sign-stealing scandal done by the Houston Astros in 2017.
