The NY Knicks gave false hope at halftime. After trailing just 60-55 at the break, the Philadelphia 76ers used a strong second half to blow away the teasing Knicks 109-88. Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 27 points and 10 rebounds in an easy win to drop New York to 0-2 on the season.
Main NY Knicks Headlines
Julius Randle and Alec Burks kept the NY Knicks in the game, where New York had no business hanging around. Randle led the team with 25 points, while Burks added 22 points. It was the second strong game of the season for Burks, but there were plenty of disappointing headlines for the team.
RJ Barrett: A Knicks Disaster
Barrett is supposed to be the future face of the franchise. Instead, the former No. 3 overall pick looked lost in the woods. Barrett was scoreless for the majority of the first half. He finished the game 2-of-15 shooting with 10 points. It was a terrible night for Barrett.
A New York Negative
Despite Randle leading the team offensively, he also led the team with a +/- rating of -20. It’s quite the contradiction for a solid point total for the big man. However, he wasn’t alone. Mitchell Robinson finished with a rating of -19, Barrett with a rating of -16, while Elfrid Payton was -15.
Dennis Smith Jr. Needs to Leave NY Knicks
Once upon a time, Smith looked like a future All-Star when he played for the Dallas Mavericks. Smith was traded as part of a package for Kristaps Porzingis but he hasn’t lived up to his Dallas hype. Instead, he went from averaging 14.5 points to 5.5. In his first game of the season, he only mustered four points. It’s time to cut the cord and give Smith new scenery.
NY Knicks Game Analysis & Commentary
Alec Burks’ Stock is Rising
Through two games this season, Burks is averaging 22.0 points per game. Burks could find himself in a similar situation to Marcus Morris Sr. from last year. Morris was averaging around 18.0 points per game and was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for draft compensation. If Burks keeps putting up these quality numbers, he could be traded to a title contender.
Elfrid Payton’s NY Knicks Goose Egg
How does Payton go a whole game and score zero points? Shooting 0-of-6 from the field, Payton was a ghost. His three assists helped him secure some form of status in the box score, but his performance was pitiful.
Looking Ahead to the Next New York Matchup
The Knicks host the Milwaukee Bucks today at 6:30. The Knicks are going to be heavy underdogs against one of the prominent NBA title contenders in the league. After allowing the 76ers to shoot over 41% from the field, it could get much worse against Milwaukee. There’s a real chance that New York will be 0-3 after Sunday.
